When we think of pianos today, the modern piano seems to have remained a bastion of constancy, unchanged - a black wooden box that sings when played. Yet even in the 21st century, a select few of the best piano manufacturers in the world continue to push the boundaries of innovation and design in artisanal piano making. Artisanal manufacturers like Schimmel, Steingraeber & Söhne and August Förster, with more than 150 years of experience in the consummate craftsmanship of pianos by hand, have remained firmly at the forefront of this innovative spirit, looking back to history for inspiration in bringing forth new ways of expression, interpretation and control for the modern pianist.

In this intimate sharing session, Nicholas will delve into how good design is fundamental to a good sound and touch, and reveal some of the latest innovations in these handcrafted instruments that have fascinated the musical world and living legends alike.
